Match Report

Frenchay Fitters v Henleaze Old Boys
Thursday 12th August at Frenchay

By A Barry

With the league boiling down to the last two games, Henleaze Old Boys knew two wins would seal the title. Frenchay hospital was the venue for the match against the Fitters. Memories of previous visits were hard to come by due to most moments happening in the dark and no one seeing them. A few new faces appeared amongst the regulars for the HOBs, which was probably for the best as the blood alcohol levels weren't back to normal after the tour!!

Captain Adams won the toss and elected to bat (obviously, it wasn't going to get lighter tonight). A solid opening stand by Davies and Smith putting on 50+, with very little chances apart from two attempted run outs and 2 dropped catches. Both however, departing in fairly quick succession but only to be replaced by debutant Chidgey and Serjeant who continued to dispatch the ball to all parts of the ground. Chidgey departed after a very quick fire 32. Thomas was next in and his only contribution was to fall over going for a quick single after the bowler had blown on him! (These footballers are just not tough enough!!). Serjeant finished unbeaten with a contribution of 29 to an Old Boys total of 144. First job of maximum batting points had been achieved.

HOBs entered the field with a spring in their step with runs on the board and the darkness due to set in. The new ball was sent down by Barrett and Thomas with great speed and accuracy. Barrett picking up 3 for 13 (taking him to 32 wickets for the season, only 1 away for a HOB season record of 33 - currently held by Skipper Adams, so it looks like Anth won't be bowling again this year!!). Mopper Adams came on as first change and sorted out the rest of the innings, taking a seasons best, 4 for 9. Stand in keeper Sejeant led the way with some sharp fielding and was unduly denied a stumping off Osmond.

Onwards to Tuesday with the much anticipated derby against the YMCA, only to be spiced up with the league title on the line. A win for the old boys would see the trophy lifted for the third year in a row - Come on the HOBs!!
