Match Report

Henleaze Old Boys v MCC
Thursday 8th July at The YMCA

By SJ Adams

After Sundays rained off match, the boys were anticipating a proper game tonight to avenge our last ball defeat on that very slow wicket at Shire. The weather was very uncomfortable with muggy humid conditions.

Captain Adams on his 100th HOB appearance won the toss and surprisingly opted to put the opposition in and chase. This decision was swayed by the opposition only having 8 players and it was nearly 6.15pm. Included in the MCC team was a young lady, so we didn't want the same to happen as at Rudgleigh last seen - remember Tom Lambshead being caught out by a girl!

Smith and Barrett opened the bowling, Jon with his usual accuracy and Anth with his usual wides. After Yau smashed a huge 6 over midwicket into the near resident garden it was time for bowling change. First change Collins proved expensive, so it was down to Osmond and Adams to stem the flow of runs. After some strange bowling decisions by the Skip, Osmond was denied a final over with figures of 1-11. Davies accomplished the feat of taking his 100th wicket in taking 2-14 by tying down one end whilst Thomas' spinners was not working as he was hit to all parts of the ground.

A total of 138 for 5 in 20 overs was more than par with some very odd shots, hoiks, edges and slogs across the line, but our bowling was not the best and the fielding poor on a very lively outfield.

The boys were in confident mood after the last run chase and after early wickets we were struggling at 40 for 3 off 8 overs with Collins, Smith and Barry all out. Adams started the rebuilding with some quick singles and could have been run out with a direct hit, but with some edges, good shots and some misfields by the girl, we were back on track until Adams was caught at extra cover for 26. Now down to Mike Serjeant to keep the tempo going as Davies was in for the duration. Suddenly the game was swinging our way. With some big shots and wayward bowling we needed 21 off 3 overs - no HOB run chase is ever easy but we made it with 6 balls to spare with Man of the Match Davies making 52 and Serjeant 31.

Apologies to Osmond who has been promised a bat so many times, and still hasn't got a batting average for the season and its nearly mid July !! and Zographou for not having a bat (Niko - you need to sort out work for the Saturday of Tour - we need you).

Well done boys, but we need to bowl straight, cut out the ridiculous number of wides and improve the fielding as it is very shoddy. We used to be good at both these parts of the game!!
