Match Report

City Clarks v Henleaze Old Boys
Wednesday 5th August at The YMCA

By AM Fillingham

A day in the life of the Henleaze Old Boys fixture Secretary ………….

7am. Fillingham looks out the window and contemplates killing himself as it's still raining (although now very lightly) and there are large puddles all over the road. Still, 11 hours until KO, hopefully the sun will come out to play shortly.

8am. It's stopped raining (hallelujah!) and the weather forecast says it's going to stay dry for the rest of the day! (but what the F*@! Do they know………)

11am. Stuck in a meeting all day (without lunch I hasten to add). I've managed to position myself with a great view of the car park but more importantly a view of the sky which is cloudly but blue and it's still dry! I've left my phone on in case I get the dreaded phone call from the opposition or the groundsman informing me that the game is off.

1.30pm. I get a text message and sneakily read it under the table. It's from our captain informing me of his 'play day' morning on College Green. He also informs me that the grass was soft but fine and not wet and that if the YMCA call it off tonight they've cheated us!

3pm. Finally get out of this meeting, run to Sainsburys to get food and water before I faint. It's actually turning into a nice sunny day for once!

5pm. Still sunny! Leave work and cycle home to pick up my kit bag and get ready for tonight's game that surely must be on now!

5.45pm. Turn up at the YMCA, most of our team are already there. No sign of opposition.

6pm. All of our team here (10 of us that is, Sam can't make it, some rubbish excuse of having stay on at work or something - not interested) Still no opposition.

6.15pm. Opposition finally turn up, they win the toss so we'll be batting in the dark (again). Cheers.

6.30pm. The game gets underway, tight opening bowling from JS Smith and D Hawksley sees City Clarks reduced to 8 for 2 from 4 overs. This backed up from Tom Lambshead, Paul Ashford and Stu Adams and Clarks are going nowhere fast.

7pm. With the score on about 30 for 3 from 13 overs, captain Pandya-Smith decides he needs to make a game of it and thinks that by lobbing up some "filth", they might start playing some more aggressive shots. That they do and his first delivery gets smashed for six. In the old days people would stick all their filth in a black bin-liner and lob it in a forest, but the internet has killed that stone-dead.

7.45pm. Clarks finish on 88 for 4 from 20 overs. Jo has his wish and we've got something to chase.

7.50pm. Fillingham and Lambshead make their way to the middle. It's already dark.

7.55pm. Fillingham and Lambshead both back in the pavilion having been caught behind for bugger all.

8pm. Ashford and Caller join Fillingham and Lambshead back in the pavilion having failed with the bat. 88 is now looking like a good score! Luckily JS Smith is going after the bowling like a badger at the start of the pairing-up season and the runs are being quickly knocked off.

8.20pm. Captain Pandya-Smith is caught in the deep, Hawksley in and out before you can say "quack". Smith is joined by Adams.

8.30pm. Jon moves along to 49 and is stuck at the no-strikers end with just 2 to win from 7 overs. Jo decides he needs to get a message to the batsmen to let them know Jon only needs one to bring up his 50.

8.31pm. A quick single brings Jon onto strike with the scores tied, he still needs 1 for a 50. OUT!! The next delivery hits Jon on his back leg right in front of the stumps and Jo raises his finger and gives his brother out lbw. Thomas comes in and smashes a four for victory.

9pm. Drinks and chips enjoyed by all at the kellaway!

10pm. Lambshead's worrying about what time he needs to get up in the morning (5am) and decides to make this one his last pint.

10.30pm Thomas buys Lambshead another pint (one for the raod and all that).

11.15pm. Lambshead finally escapes and make a run for his bed.

12am. The rest of us are chucked out as they want to close the pub and go to bed themselves.
