Old Boys v United Banks
Tuesday 9th June at The YMCA

The old foes of United Banks ventured to the Y for what can only be deemed a waste of time, on both our behalf's. I cant really remember what the weather was like as it was such a long time ago, but it must have held and got brighter as the game went on, in usual fashion. We won the toss in the middle again, and one might have to say that Jo must have been practicing this side of his captaincy quite regularly in the post season. We decided to bat and put the game beyond reach early doors. Ed, the steady opener and Pete, the blaster took to the middle in preparation. Pete however, scored a dismal 5 and Will followed quickly with yet another duck for the season. Ed was holding the other end as el Capitain took to the field and made his presence known with a quick fire 11 that included 2 fours. Then the usual bit of controversy happened whilst playing United Banks they tried to bowl the openers for a fifth over each, who the hell plays 20/20 in this fashion. No other team we have ever played has tried this approach. I was umpiring, as usual, when Ed piped up from behind the parapet to tell the captain that this was not how the game of 20/20 was played. Suitably p****d, presumably as they only considered to bring 4 bowlers, the bowling attack was changed. After Jo was dismissed the one arm bandit that this Al Pearce took centre stage and crack a majestic 22, Tom L then hit 17 and somewhere along the way Ed was out 7 short of this half century. Phil, the power, Sarjeant hit an unbeaten 18 an the tail did very little mustering 14 runs between the 4 of them. All out for 140 in 18.2 overs. Should have used all the balls boys!!!! Was the cry. Anyway we took to the field full optimism as the beast of blaize was know where to be seen, yet again!!!! Scared perhaps or maybe he never ventures far from the safety of the castle grounds. Immediately we had them on the back foot. An early run out by Sarge, a couple of wickets from yours truly. Then the game pretty much grinded to a holt as the batsmen seemed to play for bad light, but this I am sure of there was NONE to be seen!!! In the end Ed had another great bowling spell with 3 for 9 at the Captain ended up with 2 for 8. They fell 55 runs short and to be honest never seemed to be game once they started batting. At the end we felt as though this was not the most glamorous game to be involved in. Anyway a victory is a victory and we chalk up another W for the HOBs. |
