Match Report

Henleaze Old Boys v MOD
Wednesday 16th July 2008 at The Rudgleigh Inn

By S Adams

Due to pitch unavailability at the YMCA, it was arranged to play our "home" match on the road and the game was played at Easton-In-Gordano. This was the reverse fixture from earlier in the season when Jo Smith and Will Thomas seen his home after MOD had thought they had won the match with all their early wickets. MOD were out for revenge whilst HOBs were aiming to maintain their unbeaten wining 20 over record. The pitch was prepared but the straight boundaries were on the short side.

Jo won the toss and the inevitable happened, batting second in the fading light. A tidy opening spell from Will Thomas and Jon Smith - including 2 more wickets for Jon - stopped the run surge until Ridge opened his account with two consecutive leg side sixes off no balls over waist height, the second immediately after Jon confirmed that he wont bowl that previous delivery again!! The game was now on and Jon was immediately taken off after this battering. First change bowlers Anth Barrett and Stu Adams slowed down proceedings but the legside boundary was constantly peppered by Ridge. The remaining bowlers including the reliable Ed Davies took some stick with the exception of Tom Loughran's excellent bowling who finished with 3 for 9 off 3 overs including a spectacular catch by Sam Lambshead over his head at long on.

A total of 124 for 8 was made with Ridge hitting 80 but not many runs through the offside!! We were reasonably confident of chasing this total down but special mention to Phil Serjeant's keeping, Ed Davies first ever HOBs dropped catch and Will Thomas ball retrieving duties in the deep in the adjacent field.

The usual HOBs batting occurred with the loss of early wickets and Phil Serjeant's unlucky dismissal summed it up by being dropped on the drive and the fielder managed to retain the ball through the help of his jumper. After a mad couple of balls with lazy running and direct hits from fielders two more batsmen (could have been 3) were dispatched to the pavilion. It was now down to Jo & Will to recover the situation again but Will was out leg before and the situation was literally getting darker by the over. But in came Jon Smith to hit 31 glorious runs in a partnership with the captain of 45 for the 8th wicket which got us within 10 runs with 18 balls left. Surely we could now win this but after some tidying bowling we needed 4 to win off 6 balls. Then 3 consecutive dot balls straight through to the keeper and a revised tactic came into play. Tip and run, 2 needed off the last ball. Jo knocks it through the mid wicket region with the help of not the best fielding and some desperate running sees us home.

The winning run continues in a very tense and enjoyable game which deserved a quick pint to celebrate and a nice Steak for Tom!! Hopefully we may be back there for further games in future and the question is can we keep this winning run going to the end of the season???!!!
