Match Report

Bushwackers v Henleaze Old Boys
Tuesday 24th June 2008 at The YMCA, Golden Hill

By A Barry

League match 5 was upon the Henlease Old Boys, with 4 wins out of 4 under the belt, talk of the championship was in the air. Confidence had taken a slight knock after the weekend's match (less said about that the better) but all were keen to continue the 20Twenty unbeaten record and move another step closer to silverware. The Bushwakers were the opponents and what looked like a gladiatorial battle on paper would soon commence.

Toss was won by skipper Smith who threw down the gauntlet to the opposition by electing to field. The ball was tossed to regular opening bowlers Smith (Jon) and Barrett. The batsmen weren't keen to hang around and willing to throw the bat at anything. Smith prospered with some earlier wickets with an excellent spell of 3 for 12 off 4 overs. Bowlers Thomas, Ashford and Adams came on and each took a wicket for their efforts. A few late wickets for Skipper Smith restricted the batsmen and he finished with respectable figures of 3 for 18. Fielding was at highest standard and HOBs left the field with their heads held high needing to score 94 to win.

Openers Davies and Serjeant (Phil) strode out to bat to begin the chase. A difficult challenge of 94 was ahead but with the talent of this HOBs batting unit it would surely be achievable. Serjeant seemed to have played his way in only to be caught out for 15, Davies on at the other end started to build his innings knowing that there were plenty of overs to come. Skipper Smith entered the fray with a quick 11 to push along the rate but it was opener Davies who was the backbone of the chase, ticking along nicely. He was batting as smoothly as Casanova on a night out drinking a pint of John Smiths. Davies soon passed the half century milestone, his 3rd of the season, with great applause from the crowd. HOBs passed the required target with 8 balls to spare. Davies winning the man of the match award with a splendid 66 not out.

The march towards the title and the unbeaten 20Twenty record continues. It can only be a matter of time before Standford offers the HOBs the chance to play for millions but surely they would all trade it all in for the league title.
