Match Report

Henleaze Old Boys v Venturers
Thursday 12th July 2007 at The YMCA, Golden Hill

By S Adams

The final game of our hectic fixture schedule taking in our 4th game within 8 days arrived with unavailability's including the captain Jo resulting in a much changed team. Ed Davies had the honour of taking over the captaincy duties against the Venturers who we were playing for the first ever time. Ed walked out to the middle and inevitably lost his first ever toss as captain which resulted in us batting first.

We started cautiously with a couple of lucky escapes but Ed Davies and Al Pearce pushed the score along to a season's best opening stand of 67 against some easy paced bowling. Al was cleaned bowled for a great 24, which lead to a couple of quick wickets falling - Mike Serjeant for 1 and Ashley Fillingham 4. Ed continued to accumulate the runs in making a second successive 50 including a legside six before he was out for 59. This brought Andy Burnell to the wicket who, together with Stu Adams added a further 38 in just over 4 overs with Burnell making 23. A total of 140 is the Clubs highest ever score batting first in a 20 over match and despite a weakened bowling attack we were confident of defending this total.

Jon Smith and Leigh Caller opened the bowling and despite an expensive loosener from Jon we soon had them tied down with some great swing bowling from Lee. First change saw Tom Lambshead back into the bowling for the first time this season and his right arm around action again tied down the top order. This excellent spell resulted in figures for Caller of 2-19 and Lambshead 1-16 including a leg before decision. Some tidy mid innings bowling from Adams for his customary two wickets supported by some excellent ground fielding (Burnell and Clements) and holding our catches meant that the game was petering out to an easy victory. This enabled us to vary the bowling and utilise Al Pearce and Mike Serjeant, with both bowling 2 overs each highlighting in Mike getting his first ever HOB wicket - clean bowled.

A comprehensive 35 run victory after losing our unbeaten record on Tuesday, with Ed Davies rightly named Man of the Match for his innings, his three catches and his fielding positions on the boundary for the right/left handed partnerships! We can know rest our aching limbs and have 3 days off till our next game on Monday evening.
